Since the invention of cinematography over a century ago, the media world has undergone rapid changes that have influenced moviegoers’ experience and the artistry of film itself. Each stage in the strange world of filmmaking has seen some new development intended to make movies more accessible, more exciting, and more enjoyable. From silent black-and-whites to the colorful computer-designed films of today, the film world has continued steadily down the road to modernity. Now, a new revolution has emerged. Once considered a futuristic oddity, three-dimensional (3D) movies have become a common and expected luxury of the viewing experience, branching from theatrical releases to television broadcasts.

Though existing in some form since 1915, 3D media was not available to the masses because of the costliness of producing it and the lack of a standardized format for displaying it. The first few tests of 3D technology were shown at the Astor Theater in New York City; primitive reels of tests, including rural scenes and footage of Niagara Falls. The response was positive, leading to more major breakthroughs, such as the releasing of the first public 3D movie in 1922, “The Power of Love.” The cinematographer, Robert F. Elder, collaborated with photographers to utilize anaglyph images, the earliest method of presenting theatrical 3D. This method introduced the phenomenon of 3D glasses, beginning with the archetypal red and blue design. These innovations influenced the production of newer systems of 3D, from polarization systems that utilize the modern black glasses to Autostereoscopic displays, 3D without glasses, a relatively new development.

Despite how long ago 3D media was pioneered, for much of the 1970s and 1980s it was poorly received. These decades favored a smattering of more introspective period works, paired with some of the nation’s first blockbusters. But all the landmark hits released from the ‘70s right up until the start of the 20th century—centerpieces of American filmmaking like “Jaws,” the “Star Wars” trilogy, and even “Titanic”—were all released in 2D. The desire for 3D media seemed low as well; American moviegoers were content to see movies in their “flat” form, and the world of 3D entertainment seemed to remain a fascinating, but surreal oddity. In fact, the technology remained unused and un-demanded.

The 3D resurgence we see today is in part thanks to the work of two major entertainment corporations: IMAX and Disney. IMAX allowed movies to be presented on a massive scale with new, high-tech projectors. The calling card of the IMAX company was to bring viewers into a more accessible movie experience, one the emphasized a shocking, adrenaline-filled, overwhelming view of the film. One of the technologies best suited to enhance the IMAX experience is 3D film. IMAX gained a newly devoted fanbase when they put the 3D glasses into their arsenal of alluring surprises, and began featuring popular films in 3D.

IMAX’s first major 3D project was born humbly in the animated “The Polar Express”; it proved a huge success. According to IMAX’s own statistics, the 3D version grossed some 14 times as much as its two-dimensional counterpart. Disney also helped to reintroduce 3D media to the world. The Walt Disney Company, and their animation affiliate Pixar, began to experiment with the application of 3D to Disney films, and their first test came in another animated feature, “Chicken Little.” Again, the three-dimensional version was a huge success. In its early stages of becoming a mainstream phenomenon, 3D film dazzled the younger audiences first, before whom it was tested with animated features by IMAX and Disney. But soon, the technology would make the leap towards big-scale box office success and demand mainstream attention as a new, cutting-edge sensation.

By 2008, 3D film styles had permeated into other genres, from a variety of nature films and documentaries to the first 3D horror film in “My Bloody Valentine: 3D.” But a project by James Cameron, one that he reportedly had begun long before in 1994, was soon to change the status of 3D entertainment everywhere: “Avatar,” the fantastic science-fiction feature that captured the attention of the entire world. Boosted by the success of its 3D version, Cameron’s biggest project would smash all box-office records, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time. It took the world of media to a new level, and with it we see today the frequency of 3D media, whether in computer graphics, video games, or feature films, on a sharp incline.

Because of the growing popularity of 3D cinematography and the increased revenue it generates, old classics, such as “The Beauty and the Beast” and “Titanic” have been remade with 3D technology to hit the big screen again. The latter was converted with $18 million, only to earn a worldwide total of $316.9 million. Rolling Stone film critic Peter Travers rated the reissue 3.5 stars out of 4, and said, “The 3D intensifies ‘Titanic.’ You are there. Caught up like never before in an intimate epic that earns its place in the movie time capsule.”

But how will the growth of the 3D industry affect filmmaking? Sometimes it seems that all the attention drawn to the visuals may take away from some of the classic elements of American movies. Certain films just suit themselves better to three dimensions: action-packed features of violence, car chases, and the like. But the subtleties of some of the film world’s greatest acting performances, the intricacies of the plot and script, may be lost beneath impressive visual effects.

The next time you see a 3D film, and enjoy the exhilarating visual experience, ask yourself how much else in the film really caught your attention, whether you really paid attention to the plot or thought about the characters. Most of us don’t. The question comes down to whether moviegoers mind. Will they forego the chance to understand a more interesting film in favor of a more instantly stimulating experience? Optmistically, filmgoers across the world will keep a taste for truly good filmmaking, and this may balance out the drive for simpler and more adrenaline-oriented movies. But for now, we can only hope that 3D film is a trend or a bonus, and not a revolution.

3D: Active vs Passive Right now, whether you’re viewing 3D in a movie theatre or in the home, doing so requires those funny glasses. There are two main types of 3D display technology: Passive and Active. In both cases, glasses are used that are matched to the display or projection format. These are generally designed to be worn just like normal glasses, and in fact can be worn over the prescription glasses you may already use. Passive (or Polarized) is the 3D process that’s by…

What to Choose: IMAX 3D versus RealD versus Dolby 3D for 3D …

Lately this has become a big question for a lot of people, especially when considering where to go and watch James Cameron’s 3D blockbuster Avatar, and the questions has crossed my mind too, considering that there are cinemas with all of the three major 3D technologies where I live too. So here is a quick and short comparison between the three major solutions used in 3D movie theaters worldwide, along with information on which one I personally prefer, but you are also more than welcome to share your personal preferences along with the WHYs…

Latest technologies are increasing abruptly. A 3 D television is a TV set that projects a television program into a realistic three-dimensional field by employing techniques such as stereoscopic display, multi-view display, or 2D-plus-depth, and a 3D display.

‘The Avengers’ Sets Sights on ‘Avatar’ & Increases Shawarma Sales

by Ethan Anderton
May 14, 2012
Source: Variety

The second weekend with The Avengers at the box office has come and gone, and just because it was Mother’s Day yesterday, doesn’t mean people weren’t going to see some superheroes assemble (after all, Mom’s can be nerds too, and if they’re not, Thor and Captain America have some rippling arms to entice them). In fact, the Marvel Studios flick Hulk smashed the competition yet again to the tune of just over another $100 million to go with the film’s amazing $200 million weekend opening. Now it looks like the film may break even more box office records as achievements set by Avatar are within reach. More below!

The Avengers hit pretty much everywhere else in the world before it made its way to the United States, and territories like the United Kingdom had racked up over $480 million (according to Variety) as of May 6th. From their figures of international and domestic box office towards the end of last week, it looked like the film might smash Avatar’s record of reaching $1 billion in worldwide gross in four weeks, the fastest any film has hit that number. Well, if the math is right, it looks like the film just may do that as seems to have already hit $1 billion (according to Box Office Mojo). And with the earliest international release date being April 25th, that means it reached that goal in 19 days, and that’s the game. Well done, Marvel.

But the box office isn’t the only place where The Avengers is having an impact. For those who stuck around after the end of the credits, even longer than the teaser for a mysterious new villain, there was a special little treat. As we reported before the release, there is indeed a second credits scene, and if you don’t want to know anymore, and wish to see if for yourself, then read no further. Following a couple of funny suggestions to get some shawarma from Tony Stark, the assembly of The Avengers sits in a small restaurant, exhausted and disheveled, eating the Arab assembly of meats in complete silence. It’s a one shot joke, and it’s worth the wait. Now TMZ (via SlashFilm) has spoken with several different fine eating establishments all across Los Angeles and they all say sales of shawarma went through the roof after the first weekend of release. I wasn’t even sure what it was, and I definitely wanted some. It could be the best non-brand-specific product placement ever. Did anyone out there get some shawarma after The Avengers?

After breaking several international box office records, The Avengers opened in North America last weekend to become the biggest film opening of all time, handily beating out previous record holders The Dark Knight and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 while becoming the first ever film to cross the $200 million mark on its domestic debut.

In its second weekend, Earth’s Mightiest continue their success story, becoming the first every film to cross $100 million in its second weekend while also crossing the $1 bullion worldwide total mark, just 19 days after its first opening overseas.

Last weekend’s actual haul for The Avengers was $207,438,708 and this weekend, with only a 50% drop, the estimates have Marvel Studios’ latest blockbuster earning another $103.2 million in North America. With these estimates, The Avengers is expected to cross the 10-figure mark today with a total of $373.2 million at the domestic box office and $628.9 million internationally, enough to edge out The Dark Knight’s total box office earnings. Needless to say, Disney CEO Bog Iger confirming The Avengers 2 is in development was a welcome given.

And with that, Disney happily points out that The Avengers is now one of their five films among the 12 movies which have earned $1 billion theatrically, the other four being Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Alice in Wonderland, Toy Story 3, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

For comparison, here are the top five second-weekend performances (domestic) along with their opening weekends:

The Avengers - $207,438,708 (opening), $103,163,000 (second)

Avatar - $77,025,481 (opening), $75,617,183 (second)

The Dark Knight - $158,411,483 (opening), $75,166,466 (second)

Shrek 2 - $108,037,878 (opening), $72,170,363 (second)

Spider-Man - $114,844,116 (opening), $71,417,527 (second)

Note: The sixth, seventh and eighth films on the second-weekend earnings list are all Disney films. Also note: Three of the top five and six of the top 20 are all comic book films. So, Disney acquiring Marvel for $4 billion… Good decision.

With Battleship, What to Expect When You’re Expecting, and The Dictator opening this week, The Avengers has a good chance of winning next weekend as well.

If you’ve seen The Avengers, please refrain from talking spoilers – we have a spoilers discussion thread for that and check out our discussion on The Avengers post-credits scenes.

The Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Clark Gregg, Tom Hiddleston and Stellan Skarsgard. It is of course written and directed by Joss Whedon.

IMAX is thinking big in China.

“China has become the second-largest market outside of North America for IMAX,” said CEO Richard Gelfond.

As part of its increased cooperation with Chinese filmmakers, the company will release Flying Swords of Dragon Gate, starring Jet Li, in about 30 screens in North America, the first Chinese film to be released there in IMAX 3-D format.

When Avatar hit China in 2010, it was released on only 13 IMAX screens, but now The Avengers is available on 68.

There will be about 100 IMAX screens in China by the end of this year, and another 100 are coming in the next two years, he said.

Box office revenues in China have been increasing at an average 30 percent a year since 2003, reaching 13 billion yuan ($ 2 billion) in 2011.

The country imports only 20 foreign films for theatrical release a year. But Gelfond is excited about a deal hammered out in February during Vice-President Xi Jinping’s visit to the United States. Under the deal, 14 extra films will be imported every year.

“We think this is a positive step forward for Chinese moviegoers,” he said.

But the company is still eager to find more content, not only from Hollywood blockbusters, but also local productions.

Company executives have been meeting Chinese directors to learn about their ongoing or finished projects.

The company previously would only convert one or two Chinese films a year, such as Feng Xiaogang’s Aftershock about the disastrous Tangshan earthquake, and Hong Kong director Tsui Hark’s Flying Swords.

“But in the near future we will work on three to five Chinese films every year,” Gelfond said.

The company will provide seminars, workshops and facilities to help Chinese filmmakers better understand what kind of movies are suitable for the format.

It will not only convert completed Chinese films, but also join projects before production starts.

The company is currently in talks with Legendary East, a subsidiary of Legendary Pictures, about using IMAX cameras to shoot Great Wall, a Chinese epic story.

If the deal proceeds, it would be the first Chinese film shot with IMAX cameras, instead of converted to the format after shooting is complete.

There was a thread while back asking people how they were going to see the movie, but I'm looking for some technical opinions. Our options for seeing Prometheus appear to be IMAX 3D, Real 3D, and normal 2D. I'm not much of a moviegoer, and the last movie I saw in a theater was Avatar in IMAX 3D. I've got quite a few options for theaters in my area. I'm sure I can find it on IMAX 3D, and there is a Marcus theater in the area that will more than likely put it on one of their Ultrascreens (up to 75' by 32') in Real3D. I've been reading a lot about 3D lately and the biggest issue seems to be the relative brightness of the movie. With Avatar it didn't seem too bad, but that movie had a lot of outdoor brightly lit scenes. Even the night scene had a lot of bright plants and insects. With Prometheus I'm expecting a pretty dark movie, and I'm not expecting the creatures to glow fluorescent like Avatar. I read that they filmed the movie pretty bright to compensate, but it's still going to be darker than the 2D normal version

There was a thread while back asking people how they were going to see the movie, but I’m looking for some technical opinions. Our options for seeing Prometheus appear to be IMAX 3D, Real 3D, and normal 2D. I’m not much of a moviegoer, and the last movie I saw in a theater was Avatar in IMAX 3D.

I’ve got quite a few options for theaters in my area. I’m sure I can find it on IMAX 3D, and there is a Marcus theater in the area that will more than likely put it on one of their Ultrascreens (up to 75′ by 32′) in Real3D. I’ve been reading a lot about 3D lately and the biggest issue seems to be the relative brightness of the movie. With Avatar it didn’t seem too bad, but that movie had a lot of outdoor brightly lit scenes. Even the night scene had a lot of bright plants and insects. With Prometheus I’m expecting a pretty dark movie, and I’m not expecting the creatures to glow fluorescent like Avatar. I read that they filmed the movie pretty bright to compensate, but it’s still going to be darker than the 2D normal version.

So my questions.

First is IMAX 3D vs Real 3D. Has anyone seen the same in both formats and have an opinion? Normally I would think IMAX would be better, but the movie wasn’t filmed with IMAX cameras. It was converted to the IMAX format. I’d rather see a movie with a sharper and less dark image.

Second, do you think the dark environment of the movie will be an issue with a 3D version? I really like what I’ve seen in the trailers, and would hate to go see it in 3D to be dissapointed by a fuzzy dark image. I just haven’t seen enough 3D movies to know how the same movie looks in the different formats.

America’s favorite superheroes continued to dominate the box office in historic fashion.

After shattering records with a $207 million opening, The Avengers earned $103 million in its second weekend, not only throttling the current box office competition, but also topping the previous Week 2 high marks of blockbusters Avatar and The Dark Knight.

Both of those movies took in $75 million in their second weekends — a figure The Avengers easily soared past.

The week’s big new release, Johnny Depp and Tim Burton’s vampire collaboration Dark Shadows, came in a very distant second with $28.8 million.

Nabbing third even further down was Think Like A Man with just $6.5 million in ticket sales.

The Hunger Games and The Lucky One finished in fourth and fifth places with $4.4 million and $4.1 million, respectively.

Rounding out the Top 10 were The Five-Year Engagement ($3.2 million), Pirates! Band of Misfits ($3 million), The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel ($2.7 million), the Edgar Allan Poe thriller The Raven ($2.5 million), and Chimpanzee ($1.7) million.

As impressive as this is, the stats are higher because movies tickets are more expensive now (especially for 3D films). I’d really like to see how many people were actually in the theatre compared to the prior movies that held the record(s).

Avatar had 3D and IMAX also. And it’s only been 2-3 years since Avatar and TDK. Stop making excuses for the record being set. The movie is a really good movie and that’s that. Even taking into account inflation of prices and 3D/IMAX (only in TDK’s case), it still would beat the record by a comfortable margin.

Disney needs to give bonuses to Joss Whedon and the casts for doing such a great job putting this movie and script together. Even a million bonus each would not hurt the bottom line one bit since this will probably hit the 3 billion mark in 3 months internationally.

Completely agree, I just got back from seeing this movie and it was amazing! I want to go back and see it again, and I hate going to the theater, but it was so worth it! Action packed, great actors and effects, and so many comedic moments.
